Meet Jon Scieszka

Jon Scieszka Jon Scieszka is the author of some of the best known and funniest books written for children including The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, The Time Warp Trio series and the Caldecott Honor Book The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Fairy Tales not to mention the first book in the Trucktown series, Smash! Crash! He is a former elementary school teacher, an avid promoter of literacy and the first National Ambassador for Young People's Literature appointed by the Library of Congress. Jon lives with his family in Brooklyn, NY.

Jon is the founder of GUYS READ, a nonprofit organization dedicated to motivating boys to read by connecting them with materials they will want to read, in ways they like to read.
The Guys Read mission is to:

Make some noise for boys. As a group, boys are having trouble becoming lifelong readers. We need to understand the different ways boys engage with reading.
Expand our definition of reading. Include boy-friendly nonfiction, humor, comics, graphic novels, action- adventure, magazines, websites, and newspapers in reading. Let boys know that all these materials count as reading.
Give boys choice. Motivate guys to want to read by letting them choose texts they will enjoy. Find out what they want. Let them choose from a new, wider range of reading.
Encourage male role models. Men have to step up as role models of literacy. What we do is more important than all we might say.
Be realistic. Start small. Boys aren’t believing that "Reading is wonderful." Reading is often difficult and boring for them. Start with "Here is one book/magazine/text you might like."
Spread the GUYS READ word. Encourage people to use the information and downloads on the GUYS READ site to set up their own chapters of GUYS READ, and get people thinking about boys and reading.
